Manchester United confirm the appointment of Michael Carrick as new head coach

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as the head coach following a successful interim period. The former Manchester United star will continue as the head coach following discussions with the club.
Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim following the Portuguese’s sacking and has masterminded a remarkable transformation in fortunes for United, and they will finish the Premier League season in third place, looking forward to Champions League football next season.
The 44-year-old has won 11 of 16 matches in charge of the Old Trafford club and has now been rewarded with the job on a full-time basis.
Carrick was the favourite to land the job after his successful interim period, which included wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Aston Villa. United lost just once under Carrick, away to Newcastle.
Since being fired by Middlesbrough in June 2025, this will be Carrick`s first permanent managerial position. With United back in Europe, he will have to oversee a far busier schedule than during his interim tenure.
The 44-year-old will also need to strengthen a team that doesn`t seem to have what it takes to contend for big titles, particularly after the important Brazilian midfielder Casemiro left in the summer.
Carrick`s appointment comes at a crucial time as United set themself for a big summer ahead. The `Red Devils` will need to replace the outgoing Casemiro and add more players to the team to be competitive in Europe.
After securing a top-three finish with a win in the last match against Nottingham Forest, Manchester United will end their campaign away to Brighton on Sunday.
Casemiro won`t feature against Brighton: Carrick
Michael Carrick announced that Casemiro will not feature against Brighton on Sunday. The Brazilian star received an emotional goodbye from the Old Trafford faithful in their last league game against Forest.
Bruno Fernandes is chasing a Premier League record 21st assist after equalling the record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne of 20 assists. Manchester United are set to finish third in the table irrespective of the result, while a win could take Brighton to a Europa League spot.
